The lives of Kenny and Shannon Dickie

It's a Deck!

posted Sep 27, 2011 12:12 PM by Kenny Dickie

Well I thought maybe I would be motivated enough to do the deck and landscaping myself... but it turns out I'm far more selfish in the summer so I just paid someone else to do it.

If you forgot what the original house looked like here is the original front of the house with trees and without trees.

Oh and Sophia is still alive and kicking.  Here are some pictures of her:

It's a Girl!

Well Shannon did it. We welcome Sophia Morgan Dickie into this world at 2:10 am on July 14, 2011.  She weighed 7lbs 11oz. We all knew she would come into this world with a full head of hair. She also had excellent working vocal cords the moment she came out of her past home.

Shannon toughed it out without the aid of pharmaceuticals and remained relatively PG throughout the whole experience.

Big thanks to our wonderful Midwife Noreen and good friend and Doula Wynne. You helped make the whole birthing processes a wonderful experience.

Shannon didn't realize she was in labour until 6PM yesterday.  It took her another 8 hours of labour and about 35 minutes of pushing for Sophia to emerge into this world.

Milk River Canoe

posted Jun 20, 2011 10:21 AM by Kenny Dickie   [ updated Jun 20, 2011 10:54 AM ]

Shannon and I got away for a June canoe down Milk River (southern border of Alberta).  Usually Milk River is a slow moving rock avoiding river but with all the rain we've had they said it's the most water the river has seen in 12 years.

We did three days of canoeing and stayed an additional night to explore Writing on Stone National Park. Friday was a pretty cold and rainy day but that just made us appreciate the fabulous Saturday and Sunday weather. We had a great group of canoers and we had an awesome time.

Spring Update

posted May 11, 2011 3:49 PM by Kenny Dickie   [ updated May 12, 2011 3:13 PM ]

Guess it's been a while since I've updated anything...

Shannon and I went to Kauai in February.  We played a LOT of beach volleyball.  It was awesome.

Cat's got spayed and neutered. They weren't too happy...

My hair grows. Someone who hasn't seen me in a long time thought I was wearing a wig...

Finished both upstairs bathrooms.  Completely gutted and installed everything myself (except some of the rough-in plumbing).

Spring is finally here.  My summer schedule looks like:
Sunday - Ultimate Frisbee
Monday - Slo-Pitch
Tuesday - Coed 4's Beach Volleyball
Wednesday - Men's 2's Beach Volleyball
Thursday - Coed Reverse 2's Beach Volleyball
Friday - Rest or pickup Beach Volleyball
Saturday - Rest or pickup Beach Volleyball

If you don't play a sport with me... good luck trying to find me.  :)

Winter Update and New Cats!

posted Dec 16, 2010 6:11 PM by Kenny Dickie   [ updated Dec 17, 2010 3:54 PM ]

We have finally reclaimed our home. Many of you know that we have been sharing our home with Shannon's Sister and her family (husband Mike and two kids Ben and Julie). There were some tough times and it's really nice to have our space back. To fill the space of our departed guests we decided to adopt two adorable little kittens.  I would like to introduce you to the newest additions of our Dickie family, Abby (left) and Gabby (right). You'll probably be seeing more cat photos around the enek.net website.  :)

Shannon and I continue to be super active with sports.  Shannon joined an indoor soccer team and I mostly keep busy with indoor volleyball. Indoor isn't nearly as fun as beach volleyball. We are both super excited for our trip to Kauai in Febuary for all the beach action we can handle.

We also took a little vacation to Panorama last weekend. We hit the Panorama slopes for opening weekend.  It was still pretty fun but there was definitely some ski damage trying to find some more interesting runs...  You know you're getting old when you spend just as much time inside the ski chalets as you do outside on the slopes. We also headed to Golden's Moonraker trails. We got a little turned around in the trails and went for a much longer ski than we intended, but luckily we got out before dark and headed back home for a nice soak in Radium Hot Springs.  :)

Happy Holidays Everyone!

3-day Skyline Hike in Jasper

posted Aug 13, 2010 10:02 AM by Kenny Dickie

So many of you know that I've already done the Skyline hike a couple of times.  The first two times I did the hike I did it with a small pack and ran it in a single day.  This 45km hike can be done in about 10 hours with minimal stopping and jogging on the flat parts.

This is such an amazing hike that I wanted to bring my wife and some other casual hikers. This hike is best done in 3-days.  Unfortunately we had a lot of rain each day which reduced the appeal of the hike but we did get a few sunny breaks too. We started the hike with 6 liters of wine which we quickly decided to drink the first night. Even with the inclement weather everyone enjoyed the amazing views and fun company.

New Door Insert

posted Aug 10, 2010 9:43 AM by Kenny Dickie

The front of our house was looking a little unappealing so I spent a day freshing it up.  I added a little more curb appeal by installing a new glass door insert, got a new storm door and gave it a little paint. The job didn't go without incident as I tried to screw through the nail on my finger (instead of the nail in the door).  I must say tho...  the insert purchased at Costco was well worth the effort!

What am I doing this summer?

posted Jul 12, 2010 12:31 PM by Kenny Dickie   [ updated Jul 16, 2010 2:09 PM ]

It's been a pretty busy summer so far.  We have some new squatters living in our house.  Shannon's sister, Jane, brother-in-law, Mike and their two kids Ben and Julie have been living with us since May.  It's not as bad as it could be... they seem to be pretty well behaved... They are planning to stay with us until their house is built which should be around December.

Since the house is always full of people, I try to spend as little time as possible at my house.  I've been keeping busy playing beach volleyball 5 times a week and slo-pitch once a week.  What this means is I've had very little time to work on the house.

In other news we had an unplanned uprooting of a tree.  1/4 of our beautiful mountain ash came down in a huge wind storm.  It was a pretty crazy morning chopping and hacking this tree to clear room for the vehicles.  Luckily nothing got damage during this fall... except our moose head skull which was embedded into the base of the fallen tree.

A day at the Dickie Dump

posted Apr 27, 2010 2:43 PM by Kenny Dickie

Last weekend we ordered a 40-yard bin to fill with all the construction debris we've been accumulating.  Since we only had the bin for a weekend I had to call on some of my closest friends and family to help me fill it quickly.

Thanks all for helping us get this done!

Tree Removal

posted Apr 15, 2010 2:00 PM by Kenny Dickie

Last weekend we had 3 big spruce trees removed from our property.  We had two 80' trees in our front yard and another in the backyard.  It was a lot of work but eventually they came down.  Lots of friends, family and neighbours came by to witness the destruction of our trees.  The professional arborist Mike even had some time to show off to the crowds and make a little chair.  Thank goodness that tree disposal is free at the landfill because it took 4 heaping loads to remove all the tree carnage.

Huge thanks to Russ and his brother Mike for supplying equipment and the expertise to take these trees down.  Also a big thanks to the Mike, Tanya and Jane for helping with the clean up.

Now my front yard looks pretty bare.  The landscaping probably won't happen until sometime next year as we have to wait for the stumps to soften up a little.
